The Odyssey Crosses $1 Billion at Worldwide Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, adding another major commercial milestone to the filmmaker’s career.

The achievement gives Nolan his third billion-dollar movie as a director, joining The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. More importantly, The Odyssey is the first Nolan film outside of the Batman franchise to reach the $1 billion mark.

The Dark Knight currently stands at just over $1 billion worldwide, while The Dark Knight Rises remains Nolan’s highest-grossing film at roughly $1.085 billion. Oppenheimer came close to joining them, finishing its theatrical run at approximately $976 million worldwide.

That makes The Odyssey another unusual example of Nolan turning a filmmaker-driven project into blockbuster-level business. While the movie is based on Homer’s ancient epic and features a major ensemble led by Matt Damon, it does not have the built-in modern franchise machinery associated with Nolan’s previous billion-dollar Batman films.

The Odyssey Joins a Rare R-Rated Club

The billion-dollar milestone is also significant beyond Nolan’s own filmography.

The Odyssey becomes only the third R-rated movie to gross at least $1 billion worldwide, joining Deadpool & Wolverine and Joker. Before The Odyssey, those were the only two R-rated movies to ever reach the threshold, while Nolan’s own Oppenheimer sat just below it.

That makes Nolan responsible for two of the four highest-grossing R-rated films ever, with Oppenheimer and The Odyssey both reaching levels that have historically been extremely difficult for adult-oriented films.

With The Odyssey crossing $1 billion, Nolan’s worldwide box-office leaderboard now includes three movies above the billion-dollar mark:

1. The Dark Knight Rises — approximately $1.085 billion
2. The Dark Knight — approximately $1.008 billion
3. The Odyssey — more than $1 billion
4. Oppenheimer — approximately $976 million
5. Inception — more than $800 million

The exact position of The Odyssey could continue to change as its theatrical run continues. If it surpasses The Dark Knight, it would move into second place among Nolan’s highest-grossing films worldwide. The Dark Knight Rises remains the director’s career leader at approximately $1.085 billion.

Nolan’s Box Office Run Continues

The milestone continues a remarkable commercial run for Nolan.

His previous film, Oppenheimer, became one of the biggest R-rated releases ever despite being a three-hour historical drama centered on physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. It ultimately grossed roughly $976 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Picture, while Nolan won his first Oscar for Best Director.

Now The Odyssey has gone one step further commercially by entering the billion-dollar club.

For Nolan, that means the Batman films are no longer the only entries in his career capable of reaching that level. The Odyssey has shown that a movie marketed primarily around Nolan himself, its cast and the theatrical experience can also reach one of Hollywood’s most exclusive box-office milestones.
