Chappell Roan has announced a two-night benefit event in Los Angeles to raise money for trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities.
The ‘Super Graphic Spectacular’ will take place at the Shrine Auditorium on October 21 and 22, with Roan herself set to deliver special performances at the shows.
“It will be filled with drag, dance, guests, surprises, and funnnn!!” she wrote on Instagram to announce the event. “I will be doing a special performance as well!”
Proceeds from the shows will go to the Midwest Princess Project, the charity founded by Roan last year to support trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities. Organisations based in Los Angeles that work with those communities will also be in attendance to share information and resources.
Fans can register for tickets through the official website here until 9pm local time on Tuesday (August 11), with successful applicants due to receive further information between August 17 and 19.
Roan launched the Midwest Princess Project last October, after raising more than $400,000 through her ‘Visions Of Damsels & Other Dangerous Things’ shows.
It followed Roan saying that “bringing queer people joy” is one of the main reasons she still performs live, and an official statement about the project added: “At the centre of everything Chappell Roan does is her quest to bring queer joy to the world and give back to the community of fans who have lifted her up and inspired her along the way.”
It’s not the first time Roan has supported others. Last year, the former NME Cover star won her first Grammy, and while collecting the award for Best New Artist, she called out the music industry and “demanded that labels in the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a liveable wage and health care, especially developing artists.”
Roan later pledged $25,000 (£19,000) of her own money to donations aiding struggling musicians – other acts like Noah Kahan and Charli XCX have since matched her donations.
Additionally, at the Grammys, Roan also spoke out in support of trans women. “It’s brutal right now, but trans people have always existed, and they will forever exist,” she said while on the red carpet. “And they will never, no matter what happens, take trans joy away, and that has to be protected more than anything because I would not be here without trans girls.”
Before the October shows, Roan will perform at Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival in California on August 29, while last month she made a surprise appearance at a Rosalía show in Oakland, where she revealed that a pandemic-era romantic disappointment had inspired the song ‘Casual’.
