The Jaffna Magistrate’s Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 950,000 on Lavin’s Vegetable Family Restaurant in Jaffna for selling bottled drinking water above the stipulated Maximum Retail Price.
During a raid conducted by the Jaffna District Investigation Officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), it was detected that a 1000 ml (1 litre) bottle of drinking water, for which the stipulated Maximum Retail Price was Rs.120, had been sold to a consumer for Rs. 200, exceeding the applicable maximum retail price.
Legal action was subsequently instituted against the establishment, and when the case was taken up before the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court on August 25, 2026, a fine of Rs. 950,000 was imposed.
Through such enforcement action, the CAA continues to address trading practices that adversely affect consumers, including the sale of goods above stipulated maximum retail prices, while helping to maintain a fair marketplace for traders who conduct their businesses in compliance with the law.
Consumers are advised to remain vigilant. Before purchasing a product, check its printed price and applicable Maximum Retail Price (MRP). The CAA urges to always obtain a proper bill or receipt for the amount paid and keep it safely, as such documentation can serve as important evidence in the event of a complaint or investigation.
Consumers are also urged to report of such overpriced goods being sold to the Consumer Affairs Authority through the 1977 Consumer Hotline during office hours.
