John Madden, known to many nowadays for the popular American Football games that bare his name, had a remarkable career as a coach that served as inspiration for fans. Now, the talented Will Ferrell is set to portray Madden in an upcoming movie, Deadline reports.
The original script was penned by Cambron Clark, with David O. Russell taking on the task of re-writing it for his directorial role with Amazon. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing writers’ strike, the project is currently on hold.
Madden’s legacy as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history stems from his remarkable achievements, including winning the Super Bowl. However, the intense pressure of the job eventually took its toll, forcing him to step away from his dream role. The film will centre around his friendship with Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis and highlight Madden’s journey to finding a second act that brought him even greater fame.
Despite leaving coaching, Madden remained deeply passionate about teaching the sport. He reshaped the role of a football broadcaster, captivating audiences with his larger-than-life personality, which led to numerous lucrative endorsement deals. Interestingly, Madden never played a video game in his life, yet he played a pivotal role in transforming the gaming landscape when he became the face of Madden NFL. This perennial top-selling franchise, developed by Electronic Arts, is now approaching its 24th instalment, set to release this autumn.
Given the disappointing performance of Russell’s previous film, Amsterdam, at the box office, this new project could serve as a strategic pivot for the director, offering an opportunity for a successful venture.
