Wout Poels joined Team Bahrain Victorious in 2020
Wout Poels won the first Tour de France stage of his career as defending champion Jonas Vingegaard defended his lead from a late Tadej Pogacar attack on another thrilling day in the Alps.
Dutchman Poels, riding for Team Bahrain Victorious, finished two minutes eight seconds ahead of Wout van Aert on stage 15, with Mathieu Burgaudeau third.
Team Jumbo-Visma's Vingegaard finished alongside Pogacar on the 179km stage from Les Gets to Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc which also featured a 20-rider crash caused by a fan taking a selfie.
With about 125km remaining Sepp Kuss, a team-mate of Vingegaard, had his handlebars knocked by a supporter holding a phone.
Kuss swerved into team-mate Nathan van Hooydonck, who fell off his bike and caused a crash in the peloton.
Despite attacking inside the final kilometre of the 7km climb to the finish, Slovenian Pogacar, riding for UAE Team Emirates, could not open up a gap on Vingegaard, who maintains his 10-second lead in the general classification.
Monday is a rest day, before the 21-stage race resumes with a 22.4km time trial from Passy to Combloux on Tuesday.
