Reports claiming that Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith will retire from his position by the end of 2026 are false, Reverend Father Jude Chrysantha, the Director of Mass Communications for the Archdiocese of Colombo.
Rev. Fr. Jude Krishantha said decisions regarding the Archbishop’s position are made by the Vatican.
Under Canon Law, the retirement of an archbishop is considered upon reaching the age of 80, but the final decision rests with the Pope.
Although Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith is expected to turn 80 next year, no official decision has been announced regarding his retirement, the archdiocese said.
Some media reports had suggested that a leadership change in the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka could take place later this year. (Newswire)
