The Mutual Recognition of Driving Licenses between Sri Lanka and Italy, has come into effect from April 2026.

The announcement was made on the official Facebook pages of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Minister – Vijitha Herath.

The agreement was signed following extensive diplomatic efforts jointly undertaken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development.

Accordingly, authorities have successfully completed all the technical work required for its practical implementation.

The measure provides a permanent solution to the driving license problem faced by a large number of Sri Lankans living in Italy.

Under this agreement, residents who have resided in Italy for a period of six years will be eligible to convert their national driving license to an Italian driving license without having to sit for written or practical tests.
