As ABC has renewed its two remaining comedy series, Scrubs and Shifting Gears, the network has passed on its sole comedy pilot for next season, Do You Want Kids?, starring Rachel Bloom and Rory Scovel.
Written by Bloom and her husband, writer-producer Dan Gregor, and directed by Trent O’Donnell, Do You Want Kids? is about a married couple, Rosie (Bloom) and Alex Vasilescu (Scovel), who in one universe have a baby and in the other do not, and the many ways that huge decision alters their lives.
The move was not surprising. As Deadline has reported, the Sliding Doors-style single-camera pilot was met with mixed reaction at the network, with its odds considered 50-50 at best. That, coupled with the Scrubs revival launching strong in midseason and Shifting Gears and Abbott Elementary continuing to do well, led to ABC brass’ decision to stick with its current three comedy series and not move forward with Do You Want Kids?.

In addition to Bloom and Scovel, the 20th Television-produced pilot also starred Pete Gardner, Caitlin Reilly and Stephanie Weir. Bloom, Gregor and O’Donnell executive produced with Steven Levitan and Danielle Stokdyk of 20th TV-based Levitan Productions and Jeff Morton.
