Sunlight91 And now companies can make this USB-C charging port the only high speed port of the laptop so you have to buy the $200 docking station in order to use any IO.
They could always do this. One proprietary charging port that only exists on that particular model from that year and the charger costs $300 to replace, and one high speed port so you have to buy a $200 docking station to use any I/O. Do what any other sensible person does when they see a product that doesn't fit their needs: don't buy it. That's how you tell the company what you want. What's happening now is that the laptop can stay exactly the same, with all the same ports, and the proprietary charging connector, but at least one of the USB-C ports must also accept power. That's it. It's absolutely a win for everyone, including those people who get another chance to engage in their favorite pastime, whining and regurgitating stale 9gag memes (is 9gag still a thing with the young'uns?), while not putting in any more effort than reading the title.I for one really don't miss having a box of chargers, all different from each other for each brand of laptop, or phone model (those were the worst), all with varied parameters. Is it 19V, 19.5V, 20V? Is it 4.6A or 4.75A? Is that barrel connector exactly the right size? My travel bag looked like a cable guy's troubleshooting kit because every device I traveled with needed a different charger. Now I have exactly one $35 wallwart that fits in the palm of my hand and can power everything, 3 at a time. I also have a $10 port rep that's the size of a thicker pencil and comes with a bunch of USB/HDMI and does USB-C PD so I can power a laptop through it should I ever need it. Any OEM laptop PSU costs more than that.I know people love to complain because that comes naturally when you have it good and get really bored, but this is all upside and very cheap to boot. The circuitry needed to turn a USB port into a charging one has marginal cost. Is USB-C the best connector? Don't know, the EU asked the industry to pick or design one to rule them all, this was their answer.
