Residents from several villages in Valikamam North staged a protest on Friday (May 1) outside the military commander’s bungalow, demanding the release of privately owned lands that remain under High Security Zone (HSZ) designation.
The demonstrators, representing the 256, 248, 251, and 255 GS divisions, said they were forcibly displaced from their ancestral homes in June 1990. More than three decades later, these lands remain under military control as part of an extensive high security zone.
Despite the end of the armed conflict 17 years ago, security forces have yet to vacate the occupied areas. The continued HSZ classification prevents rightful landowners from returning, rebuilding their homes, or making use of their property.
Protesters highlighted that they have carried out sustained campaigns over several years calling for the release of their lands. However, with little to no progress, residents say they have now escalated their efforts.
They announced plans to hold demonstrations every Friday until their lands are returned, with this week’s protest marking the start of a renewed and sustained mobilisation.
Residents stressed that the prolonged military occupation has had a devastating impact on their livelihoods and resettlement prospects, reiterating their demand for the immediate release of their lands.
