“It’s funny, art as commerce is very much like ‘what have you done lately,’ but I don’t think that’s true,” Malone says, reframing the gap between releases. “I never stopped writing. I had probably like 600 recordings.” Parenthood, she explains, didn’t slow creativity either, so much as redirect it. “It’s so wildly immersive,” she explains. You’re constantly pulling from your best self and rearranging yourself.” That perspective bleeds directly into themes of
Flowers for Men
, where she’s less interested in tidy narratives and instead to something more exploratory: “I have a deep desire to unearth new myths in the world. The ones I inherited aren’t carrying me where I want to go.”
That push toward new storytelling shows up in both the music and her acting work, including
The Boroughs
, the first series from the Duffer Brothers since the conclusion of
Stranger Things
. “I didn’t realize how much I had been craving narratives that invite the whole family in that don’t talk down,” she says, pointing to the show’s mix of mystery, mortality, and a cast that skews older than your typical sci-fi heroes.
