The skeletal remains of an infant were among four sets of human remains exhumed on the seventh day of the third phase of excavations at the Chemmani mass grave site, conducted on Monday, May 4.

Excavation activities continued under judicial supervision, with four skeletal remains identified during the day’s operations. Officials present at the site confirmed that the remains believed to be that of an infant were found in close proximity to an adult skeleton that had been unearthed earlier.

The discovery adds to the growing number of remains uncovered at Chemmani. With the latest findings, a total of 250 human skeletal remains have been identified across all phases of excavation carried out at the site. Of these, 247 sets of remains have now been fully exhumed.

Legal representatives present during the excavation also reported the discovery of several items believed to be evidentiary material. These items are currently undergoing cleaning procedures and are expected to be formally recovered in the coming days.

Further details regarding the materials will be disclosed following their excavation and examination.

As previously reported by the Tamil Guardian, families of the disappeared and civil society groups have repeatedly called for a full and transparent investigation into the site, as well as accountability for those responsible.
