Case Oats is the partnership of singer-songwriter Casey Gomez Walker and drummer Spencer Tweedy, who besides being bandmates are engaged to be married. They put out their debut album Last Missouri Exit on Merge last year, and today they've got a new track out ahead of a tour launching later this week.

"Bottom Of An Afternoon" reframes Gomez Walker's vocals within a much different sonic backdrop from the straightforwardly rootsy aesthetic heard on last year's LP, a blearier and slightly electronic-sounding form of folk-rock featuring a Gomez Walker trumpet solo. Tonally, she splits the difference between Dylan-esque folkie and Dawson-esque anti-folk while dropping bars like "There's gotta be an answer/ Stickin' out the bottom of an afternoon." A little explainer from the singer herself:

This song is a mantra for grief. As a kid I read Aesop’s Fables and was comforted by the idea that there’s always a moral to draw from an experience. As an adult, I find myself calling out asking “why?”, begging for visits from ghosts, holding on to any lesson I can find in the pages of books.
