Eric Clapton ends Madrid concert early after fan hits him with object

Eric Clapton ended his concert in Madrid on May 7th early after being struck by an object from the crowd.

Clapton is currently on his European tour, which he brought to the Movistar Arena in the Spanish capital last night.

However, in footage that has since circulated on social media, Clapton could be seen to be hit on the chest while walking across the stage by what appeared to be a vinyl record.

The moment occurred in his set just after he performed ‘Cocaine’, which is typically the point at which he leaves the stage, before returning shortly afterwards to deliver an encore.

Yet, in Madrid, there was no encore, and Clapton did not return to the stage.

According to the Spanish publication El País, the fan did not intend to cause harm to Clapton, and the vinyl was accompanied by a “note of affection”. While they may have had the best of intentions, it did not have the desired effect.

El País also reports that Clapton “became angry” following the incident, hence why he chose not to return to the stage in Madrid.

Clapton is yet to address the incident.

The former Cream guitarist’s tour is set to resume in Barcelona on May 10th at the Palau Saint Jordi, before the 81-year-old makes his way to Germany for shows next week in Mannheim, Cologne, and Munich.

His lone UK date is set to take place on August 23rd at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, where his special guests will include Ronnie Wood. Then, in September, Clapton will begin a short North American arena tour, ahead of headlining the Crossroads Music Festival in Austin, Texas.
