Formula 1 drivers and teams observed a minute’s silence for The Queen before the start of Practice One, which was won by Charles Leclerc.

Italian Grand Prix, which is taking place this weekend at Monza, observed a one minute silence before the practice began, which was accompanied by a brief applause from the drivers and teams in the pit lane.

Many of the cars also featured tributes to The Queen, as well as meaningful messages from the sport’s significant figures.

On the track, Leclerc set the early pace, leading a Ferrari one-two ahead of Carlos Sainz as the under-pressure team displayed encouraging performance in front of their home audience. Mercedes were their closest rivals, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton finishing third and fourth respectively.

Max Verstappen, who had won four straight races to extend his title lead, finished sixth despite having his quickest lap on soft tyres stopped by a McLaren.

F1 is set to pay another tribute to The Queen before the race on Sunday.
