2023 Oscars Predictions: Best Picture

CATEGORY COMMENTARY: Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” had perfect showings from the Oscars shortlist, getting in each category it was eligible to show up.

The two epics move into the best picture lineup as Hollywood heads into the holiday break, both having momentum in their favor.

Edward Berger’s war drama is likely to get a lot of support from the international membership of the Academy. If it’s pulling multiple nods in the tech categories, in this case, we have it tracking for cinematography, makeup, sound and visual effects. Multiple showings can add up to a picture nominee. Add in the possibility of adapted screenplay, which it can nab after winning the National Board of Review, and it’s in a solid place for major recognition for the streamer, surprisingly becoming its leading contender for best picture.

The same technical mindset applies to “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” on its best picture prospects which are currently predicted in production design, cinematography, costume design, makeup, sound, visual effects and original song. That’s massive. It has the added benefit of having a front runner in an acting category — Angela Bassett in supporting actress — which opens it up into a new realm, something its predecessor couldn’t achieve.

Keep an eye on the box office stories that will continue to surround “Avatar: The Way of Water,” and the upcoming “Babylon” and “A Man Called Otto.” The latter is a stealth contender we should watch out for and could pull a last-minute surprise, similar to “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” (2011), which also starred, Tom Hanks.
