After two weeks of spring practice, Jeff Brohm met with the media to review how the team was coming together. The message was clear—it’s early. Coach Brohm provided insight on his coaching philosophy, and it’s clear he wants to push this Louisville team and test their abilities on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. “We want to see what they can do,” Coach Brohm said. “Typical reactions. Both good and bad.” The Louisville coach mentioned he wants his team to know the playbook and be able to react quickly, and sometimes in Spring practice, “we have to dial it back,” Brohm said.

Kevin Coleman will be a big part of the Offense. – Coach Brohm

Jeff Brohm had some insight on Jackson State transfer Kevin Coleman. “He’s going to be a big part of the offensive.” Coach Brohm said. “We really like Kevin. He cares about football. He works really hard, and he has really good speed, but we’ve got to remember he’s still young. He’s played one year of college football. There’s going to be a learning curve.”

Tight End Jamari Johnson wants to contribute

Jeff Brohm briefly mentioned Incoming Freshmen Jamari Johnson: “Jamari is a really skilled athlete. He has really soft hands and a natural ability to make plays.” Coach Brohm said. He also quickly tapered the expectations on Jamari Johnson, who will play Tight End for the Cardinals. “He’s still a High School senior—the complexity of the Offense and understanding that will take a while. We have to be patient with him. But he wants to be a really good player. He wants to get out there and produce.”

After a reporter inquired about Special Teams, Coach Brohm confirmed using Kevin Coleman in the kick return game. “Basically, it comes down to making the ball touches his hands multiple times a game. It’s hard to find natural kick returners, but we have multiple guys on his team who can do it, and he’s one of them.

The overall message was clear—the team is working hard, making many mistakes, and the coaching staff is working hard to coach the errors out of his new team. The veteran, experienced players are getting light reps and keening in on getting healthy. Coach Brohm mentioned wanting to play fast and quickly adjust to defensive schemes. The 2023 team should be an exciting Louisville football, but they are clearly in a learning phase.
