Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers will not play Sunday vs. the Chiefs after testing positive for COVID-19, a source confirmed to The Athletic. The news was first reported by NFL Network. Jordan Love, the team's first-round pick in 2020, will start in his place, Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday.

Per NFL policy, vaccinated players or staff who test positive and are asymptomatic can return after two negative tests 24 hours apart. For non-vaccinated players, a 10-day isolation period is required.

Rodgers sought an exemption to the league's COVID-19 rules after receiving a homeopathic treatment, but the NFL, NFLPA and their joint medical and public health advisors declined it, a source confirmed to The Athletic. He has not previously been fined for any protocol violations.

"The primary responsibility for enforcement of the COVID protocols within club facilities rests with each club," the league said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. "Failure to properly enforce the protocols has resulted in discipline being assessed against the individual clubs in the past. The league is aware of the current situation in Green Bay and will be reviewing the matter with the Packers."

Asked on Aug. 26 if he was vaccinated, Rodgers told reporters, "Yeah, I've been immunized. ... There's guys on the team that haven't been vaccinated. I think it's a personal decision. I'm not going to judge those guys."

When asked on Wednesday if Rodgers' answer this summer on being vaccinated could be seen as misleading, LaFleur said "that's a great question for Aaron."

"I don’t think it’s a selfish decision. I mean, there’s guys across the league who are not vaccinated," Packers running back Aaron Jones said Wednesday when asked about Rodgers' vaccination status.

"And to say that they’re not committed to their team, I think that that’s not true. He’s our leader, like you said. He’s 100 percent committed to this team, just like anybody else is in this locker room. And just because of status doesn’t mean that you’re uncommitted or committed."

The Athletic's message directly sent to Rodgers asking for clarity on the situation was unreturned.

The NFL considers players to be fully vaccinated after a second dose of Pfizer/Moderna or a single dose of Johnson and Johnson, or after one shot Pfizer/Moderna after a confirmed prior infection. A prior COVID-19 infection would not count as vaccination. Unvaccinated players are required to wear masks indoors at all times except while eating.

LaFleur said he's confident all protocols have been appropriately followed and the NFL, to his knowledge, has not yet reached out about anything. He said the team is not currently in advanced protocols, but the team is acting as though they are with their spacing and masking.

Rodgers is the reigning NFL MVP. He has completed 67.1 percent of his passes this season for 1,894 yards, 17 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Love, who turned 23 on Tuesday, is 5 for 7 on the season in very limited time under center for Green Bay. He made his debut on Sept. 12 in the team's only loss of the season, a 38-3 defeat to the Saints. He threw for 68 yards and lost a fumble in 15 snaps.

The Packers are surging to a 7-1 start at the midpoint of the season after beating the previously unbeaten Cardinals last week. Rodgers threw for 184 yards and two scores in the win. Green Bay plays next at Kansas City on Sunday afternoon.
