"We are the police!" One officer felt the need to make it clear to a bystander who was asking someone to call the police. Given the scene, it was anything but obvious. The police officers' lack of uniforms and their treatment of a man on the ground, Sabri (who preferred not to disclose his full name), in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 18, has led to their prosecution before a criminal court. They were charged with group aggravated assault while intoxicated, resulting in four days of forced work stoppage, and group theft with violence.
In footage filmed by a neighbor and shared online, two men in black T-shirts can be seen in the night. One is fighting on the ground with a third person, who is struggling, before a flurry of blows appear to leave him dazed. The scene unfolded on Boulevard de l'Ariane, in the north of Nice, around 5 am. The two men were police officers assigned to a riot police unit temporarily stationed in the city and off duty at the time.
