A Mullivaikkal remembrance vehicle procession commenced on Tuesday morning from the Thiyaga Theepam Thileepan memorial site, as commemorative events marking the Tamil genocide remembrance week continued across the North-East.
The procession began at approximately 9.00 a.m. on May 12, with members of the public, civil society activists, and political representatives gathering at the memorial despite heavy rainfall in the area.
The remembrance vehicle procession is scheduled to travel across the Tamil homeland before reaching Mullivaikkal on May 18.
Participants also prepared and distributed Mullivaikkal kanji at the venue, serving the symbolic porridge to those gathered amid the downpour. The act, which has become closely associated with Mullivaikkal remembrance events in the North and East, was carried out at the memorial premises before the procession departed.
Among those attending the event were MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and former parliamentarian Selvarajah Kajendren.
The remembrance procession forms part of a series of events being organised this week ahead of Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day on May 18, commemorating Tamil civilians killed during the final stages of genocide in 2009.
