The Tamil National Council (TNC) has urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to adopt a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly reaffirming that the mass atrocities committed against Eelam Tamils constituted genocide and calling for an international criminal investigation.
In a letter dated May 10, addressed to the newly elected Chief Minister, TNC leader and Member of Parliament Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam congratulated Vijay on his electoral victory and assumption of office, whilst requesting that the Tamil Nadu government maintain a “firm and unwavering” position on the issue of justice for Eelam Tamils
The letter noted that since 2009, May 18 has been commemorated annually by Eelam Tamils as “Mullivaikkal Genocide Day,” with large numbers gathering in Mullivaikkal to remember those killed during the final stages of the war.
Recalling the 2013 resolution passed unanimously in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, which declared that genocide had been committed against Eelam Tamils and called for an international criminal investigation, the TNC urged Vijay’s administration to pass a similar resolution during the opening sitting of the Assembly this month.
The Council stated that such a move would demonstrate continuity in Tamil Nadu’s position on the Eelam Tamil issue and strengthen ongoing calls for international accountability.
The letter further stated that a renewed resolution under Vijay’s leadership would provide encouragement to Eelam Tamils seeking justice and would secure him a lasting place in the hearts of Tamils worldwide.
