Jurassic World: Dominion has become the lowest-rated movie of the entire franchise on Rotten Tomatoes, with a current critics' score of 34%.

This surpasses the series' previously lowest-ranked movie, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which received a 48% critic rating. Although the current score for Jurassic World: Dominion is extremely low, it will likely fluctuate in the coming weeks as more reviews are received.

First reactions have certainly left critics divided, with some sharing their enthusiasm while others have called it a "disappointment".

"#JurassicWorldDominion is awful. We got one of the best legacy sequels with #TopGunMaverick last week and one of the worst with Jurassic World. Poor FX, repetitive plot, and dreadful character arcs. The bulk of the narrative is barely even about dinosaurs," Jeff Nelson, chief film critic at Cheat Sheet, commented.

On the other hand, Collider's Perri Nemiroff said: "#JurassicWorldDominion rocks an excellent mix of practical & digital effects. Dinos look GREAT. Dimetrodon scene is... right up my alley. Bryce Dallas Howard runs away with the movie - & new trilogy for that matter. Claire experiences one heck of an arc & Howard soars with it."

Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, and Laura Dern reprise their roles in the dinosaur action film, which is set four years after the destructive events of Fallen Kingdom.

The dinosaurs now coexist on a global scale with humans, and the precarious balance will reshape the future and determine whether humans will remain at the top of the food chain on a planet they are now sharing with the terrifying creatures.

Dern confirmed to Digital Spy that her return as Dr Ellie Sattler was first discussed when she was working on Star Wars movie The Last Jedi.

"Frank Marshall asked me to come for a visit, so that was my first re-entry back to a set with a raptor and his friends," she recalled.

"We started having more and more conversation around it, and it seemed really exciting to me."

Jurassic World: Dominion is out now in cinemas.
