The U.S just proposed higher penalties for hospitals that do not publicly display their prices. The fine is set to be $2 million for large hospitals that do not follow the new proposed rule.

What we know:

Some hospital websites have code embedded into the site that prevents Google and other search engines from displaying their prices.

The new proposal would put an end to hospitals running this code on their site.

Medicare and Medicaid services are seeking to raise the fine to $2 million for large hospitals. Previously, the fine was $109,500 per year when a hospital broke the rules.

Moving forward: This new proposal is expected to make larger hospitals publicly display their prices for the cost of care. This would allow patients to better understand how much they are paying when going to the hospital. This would also help bring in more competition and help control rising health care costs in the U.S.
