FLINT – The street in Flint where world boxing champion Claressa Shields grew up now bears her name.
Mayor Sheldon Neely visited Shields’ church Sunday – Joy Tabernacle Church, where Shields was a guest speaker – and made the announcement that Spencer Street would forever be known as Claressa Shields Street.
“I could not be more happier today, y’all,” Shields wrote on Instagram. “I had a great time at church! So thankful to everyone who came out to worship with me today! I was surprised to see the Mayor of Flint! The street I grew up on Spencer Street is being named after me “Claressa Shields Street.” My grandma would be so PROUD!!!! I delivered a great message today! I feel so special!!! I’m overjoyed #claressashields, #GWOAT #Chosen!”
Shields, 26, is a two-time Olympic gold medal winner who has won world boxing championships in three weight divisions. She is the first boxer, male or female, to unify championships in two divisions and was the fastest boxer in history – again, male or female – to win titles in three weight classes.
She has since ventured into the world of mixed martial arts, winning her debut in June, and her second bout is scheduled for October.
Shields (11-0-0, two KOs) said she has no plans to give up her boxing career, however. Her goal is to be a world champion in both boxing and MMA. She has said she will likely box again before the end of 2021.
